Goodbye Nana

Yesterday just after 1 o'clock in the afternoon my beautiful Nana passed away aged 68.

It is not something I have felt comfortable talking about on my blog before but she has been ill for a couple of months. For many years she had problems with her liver, and just as the doctors were preparing to put the wheels in motion to arrange a liver transplant they found that most evil of diseases, Cancer. Bile Duct Cancer to be exact, a very rare and aggressive form of cancer.

She was then placed in horrible situation of her Liver was too weak for Chemo, but she could not have a new liver because of the Cancer.

Last October she was given 12 months. But here I am a mere 4 months later and yesterday I had to say goodbye.

In the end it was the Liver problems that got her, which we think was probably the lesser evil of the two. She went peacefully surrounded by her family all holding her which is all she ever wanted.

She was a wonderful Nana. So kind and loved her family so much, nothing was ever a problem. Even once she had passed her eyes were closed and she had a smile on her face with the sun shining through the window. She looked like Nana again.

Me and Nana one Christmas Morning. She loved to come and see us open our Presents
She was the one who taught me to knit, in fact she bought my first sewing kit too. She loved to make us things when we were kids. From a two foot Postman Pat or a He-Man jumper for my brother or a teddy bears picnic jumper for me.

She was just wonderful, and I am so glad I got to spend 28 years with her.

She leaves behind my Grandad, married for 52 years after meeting on a blind date when she was just 15. I can only hope my marriage to David will be even half as strong as theirs.

A world without Nana just doesn't seem real at the moment.

Love you Nana, I know you will be looking down on us.

  21. A very sad time for you. I hope the sadness in your heart will soon heal a little and you can remember the wonderful things and happy times that you both shared. Those precious memories will live on forever in your heart and be there when you need a comforting thought.

I lost my beloved grandmother over 25 years ago and I can still see her smiling face and feel her hands helping me to knit as I sit and craft and remember the things she told me.
